RELEVANT
FOR ALL
Proverbs
1:1-6
The
proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for attaining
wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for
acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and
just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and
discretion to the young -- let the wise listen and add to their
learning, and let the discerning get guidance -- for understanding
proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
This
morning we begin a new set of devotions that will lead us through
the Old Testament Book of Proverbs written by King Solomon. Proverbs
are wise sayings. More than just practical advice, more than just
deep thoughts, more than just interesting quips, however,
Solomon’s proverbs will help us live our faith. They will help us
apply God’s Word to our day to day lives, to the decisions that we
make, to the priorities that we hold, to the attitudes that we
foster, to the company that we keep. All of God’s Word is
relevant. Proverbs will show us just how relevant it can be.
The
Book of Proverbs speaks to everyone – the wise and the foolish,
the self-disciplined and the free spirit, the experienced and the
young, the strong and the weak, the knowledgeable and the
uninformed. Those who know much, will want to know more. Those who
readily follow God’s will understand their need to do it better.
Solomon said, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning and
let the discerning get guidance.” For others, Proverbs will serve
these stated purposes, “For attaining wisdom . . . for acquiring a
disciplined and prudent life . . . for giving prudence to the
simple, knowledge and discretion to the young.” May God bless our
time as we considered Solomon’s Proverbs.
PRAYER: Once again, Holy Spirit, I ask you to bless my study of this portion of your Word. Help me grow in faith. Increase my knowledge. Guide me in my life. Amen.
