LISTEN
TO YOUR FATHER
Proverbs
1:8-9
Listen,
my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's
teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn
your neck.
The
next several chapters of Proverbs will be addressed to young people, though
certainly we can apply them to ourselves regardless of our age.
With
Father’s Day coming we are reminded of things our dads (and,
of course, certainly, also our mothers) taught us when we were young
– some good, some not so good; some through what they said, some through
what they did. In spite of their own sin, however, God-fearing fathers teach
their children to fear God (to respect and love him). They train their
children in the way of the Lord. They teach them right from wrong. They
explain what Jesus did for them and what they can do in response. Thank God
for such fathers and their instruction. Continue to listen to and follow
that instruction. God will bless all who do.
PRAYER:
I thank you, heavenly Father, for the instruction you have given me in
your Word. Help me use the same Word that someone used to instruct me to
instruct others – to tell them about Jesus and to guide them in their
living. Amen.
