Proverbs
10:1-7
Solomon
spent the first 9 chapters of this Book of Proverbs explaining the
importance of holding on to wisdom – true wisdom, spiritual
wisdom.
In
chapter 10 of the Book of Proverbs we finally get into some of those
wise proverbs – wise little sayings usually 2 lines long. Each
little saying presents a positive and a negative; each little saying
contains contrasting opposites.
Throughout
the Book of Proverbs there really seems to be no planned or
anticipated order of topics. There seems to be no progression or
flow. There seems to be no link or transition from proverb to
proverb. While there will be some sections – 5 to 8 verses long
– that dwell on s certain topic, typically that is not the case
though recurring themes and topics do regularly repeat themselves.
The
first seven proverbs of chapter ten speak for themselves. Little
commentary is added. A suggestion would be to slowly read through
each proverb, one at a time, and consider the truth and the wisdom
behind each and then in faith ask God to help you to that end.
The
proverbs of Solomon:
1
A wise son brings joy to his father,
but
a foolish son grief to his mother.
2 Ill-gotten
treasures are of no value,
but
righteousness delivers from death.
3 The
Lord does not let the
righteous go hungry
but
he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4 Lazy
hands make a man poor,
but
diligent hands bring wealth.
5 He
who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but
he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
6 Blessings
crown the head of the righteous,
but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
7 The
memory of the righteous will be a blessing,
but
the name of the wicked will rot.
PRAYER: Help me avoid what is foolish and wicked and lazy and violent and give me strength to not only choose but also to be wise and honest and hard working and faithful. Amen.
